CareyPhotography > Snow-covered mountains reflected in East Superior Dry Lake in the Mojave Desert. This is usually a playa (a dry lake bed). A major winter storm brought snow to the Mojave Desert and turned the playa into a reflecting pool, creating this magical desert scene.

CareyPhotography > A Great Blue Heron (Ardea herodias) stalks the salt pools of the Upper Newport Bay Ecological Reserve in Newport Beach, California. The 752-acre Ecological Reserve is one of California's last remaining estuaries, a place where salt and fresh waters meet, and a salt water marsh. Almost 200 species of birds live there, and migrating birds stop to rest during the winter months.
